Taogent Glad Tidings | Taogent Lithium Battery Recycling Project Won the Third Prize in the Jiangsu Enterprise Innovation Competition Finals

On November 22, the final of the 5th Jiangsu Enterprise (R&D Institution) Innovation Competition was successfully held in Nanjing. The competition was guided by the Provincial Department of Science and Technology, hosted by the Provincial Institute of Science and Technology Information and the Provincial Enterprise R&D Institution Promotion Association, and attracted more than 110 experts and representatives from science and technology management departments, colleges and universities, and technology companies across the province. More than 30,000 people watched the live broadcast of the final.

The participating teams in this final came from the fields of high-end equipment and green manufacturing, new energy and new materials, electronic information and biomedicine. After fierce competition, 22 teams stood out from the major trials.

Taogent won the third prize in the final for its research and development of lithium battery puncture discharge equipment. The safe and fast discharge technology will help the vigorous development of the lithium battery recycling industry!


Taogent Find the Pain Points

1. High Demand for Decommissioning and Recycling

The installed capacity of power lithium batteries has increased sharply, and Chinese power batteries are entering a large-scale decommissioning period.

New energy vehicles drive high growth in demand for power lithium batteries: From January to December 2023, Chinese cumulative installed capacity of power batteries was 387.7GWh, a cumulative year-on-year increase of 31.6%. In 2023, Chinese new energy vehicle sales reached 9.495 million units, a year-on-year increase of 37.9%, and the market share reached 31.6%, ranking first in the world for 9 consecutive years.

The peak of power battery decommissioning is coming: In 2022, the retired capacity of power batteries for new energy vehicles in China reached 20.7GWh, a year-on-year increase of 57%, entering a large-scale decommissioning period; in 2025, the retired capacity of power batteries will be close to 50GWh. The CAGR from 2022 to 2030 is 53.9%.

2. Difficulties in Discharge Technology

Brine immersion discharge requires more than 72 hours to complete. Low efficiency, large amount of production space occupied, and long discharge time have become industry pain points that restrict the efficient recycling of lithium batteries.

3. Heavy Environmental Protection Tasks

The peak of lithium-ion battery retirement is coming. Lithium battery recycling is not only to prevent environmental pollution, but also to promote resource recycling and achieve the purpose of green environmental protection; based on traditional recycling processes, the waste gas and waste generated during the recycling process also cause damage to the environment, which is an urgent problem to be solved.

In conclusion, the demand for retired recycling is large, the discharge technology has many difficulties, and the environmental protection task is heavy. Where will the future of the lithium battery recycling industry go?

1. Solve the Compatibility Problem of Different Lithium Battery Specifications

At present, the lithium battery industry has no unified product specifications, and the lithium batteries produced by various manufacturers are of different sizes, lengths, and thicknesses. Automated production equipment has strict requirements on the specifications of processed materials, so in order to quickly discharge lithium batteries, it is necessary to maximize the compatibility of lithium batteries of various specifications.

Ramp vibration machine, lithium batteries rely on their own gravity to slide along the track into the working area of the equipment.

The horizontal track is used to send lithium batteries into the working area of the equipment; the puncture mechanism has been tested by force measurement and can pierce different batteries.


2. Solve the Thermal Runaway Problem after Lithium Battery Puncture Short Circuit

Salt water immersion discharge technology takes a long time and is not efficient. If you want to quickly discharge lithium batteries, short-circuiting the positive and negative electrodes inside is one of the most effective methods. Due to the characteristics of lithium batteries, short circuits will lead to thermal runaway, resulting in violent combustion, heat release and other problems.

Therefore, the puncture mechanism is set in a closed box structure to limit and control the thermal runaway in a limited space.

All-round fire-fighting measures are set up in the box, and special inert coolants are prepared to extinguish fires and cool down in time for combustion and heat release caused by thermal runaway of lithium batteries.


3. Solve the Problem of Waste Gas Treatment after Lithium Battery Puncture

After the lithium battery is punctured, the internal electrolyte produces toxic and harmful gases under the high temperature of thermal runaway, and the powder material inside the lithium battery will also be released into the air. In order to prevent environmental pollution and protect the health of personnel, the waste gas must be effectively collected and treated.

The waste gas generated in the puncture mechanism box is collected and transported to the waste gas treatment equipment through negative pressure pipes, and will not overflow into the environment.

The waste gas generated by discharge is sprayed with alkali solution, filtered by dust, and adsorbed by activated carbon to remove toxic and harmful components and meet the emission standards.


4. Practical Application of Products

After on-site testing by customers, by using puncture discharge equipment, lithium batteries of different specifications can be quickly processed in batches. The discharge time of lithium batteries has been shortened from more than 72 hours to less than 20 minutes, and the processing capacity per unit time area has been increased from 28kg/h·㎡ to 1500kg/h·㎡. The power consumption has only increased by a few hundred watts, and the comprehensive benefits have been significantly improved. At the same time, the waste gas generated during the discharge process has also been processed to meet environmental protection requirements.
